Insecurity: Obasanjo Knocks Tinubu Govt, Demands Global Action to Stop Killings
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has declared support for international intervention to halt Nigeria’s worsening insecurity, insisting that the Federal Government under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, has failed in its primary duty of protecting citizens.
Obasanjo spoke on Friday at the Plateau Unity Christmas and Praise Festival, held at the 10 Commandments Prayer Altar, Dwei-Du, Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The former president lamented that insecurity had become a recurring national crisis spanning several administrations.
“In this country, one problem we have is the problem of insecurity, and it has been with us. It didn’t begin with this administration and not even the administration before it. The first responsibility of any government is the protection and security of its citizens,” he said.
He argued that Nigerians reserve the right to seek global assistance if their own government remains unable to safeguard them.
“We are part of the world community, and if our government cannot protect us, we have right to call on the international community to do for us what our government cannot do for us,” he said.
Obasanjo condemned attempts to trivialise killings based on ethnic or religious sentiment.
“For anybody to say because those who are being killed belong to this region, religion or tribe… Is that an explanation? I believe that is nonsensical,” he added.
‘We Are Being Killed… and We’re Tired’
The former president lamented that citizens across religious and ethnic lines had become victims of unchecked violence.
“We Nigerians are being killed, no matter the religion you belong to, no matter where you come from… Our government seem to be incapable of protecting us,” he said.
“If we are being killed, it is the responsibility of the government to do something about it. Government should stop the killings of Nigerians… The killing of Nigerians should be stopped.”
He insisted Nigerians “should have no apologies” for calling on the global community for help if the government continued to fail.
“For me, every Nigerian life that is lost to those criminals… it is a shame for Nigeria. And we should make sure that Nigeria gets out of that,” he said.
Obasanjo questioned why available intelligence and surveillance tools were not being deployed to track down perpetrators.
“In this day of technology and satellite, there should be nobody to hide anywhere after they commit such crime,” he said.
“Before I left government, I know we had capacity to pick up anybody in Nigeria who commit crime anywhere. And now we have much capacity… With drones, you can see them all and you can take them out. But why are we not doing that? Why are we apologizing, and why are we negotiating?”
He accused government actors of negotiating with criminals and allegedly paying them, only to deny it afterwards.
“But it has to stop. We are being killed and we are tired of being killed… whether they are Christians or Muslims or pagans, they are Nigerians and the life of every Nigerian matters,” he added.
Obasanjo stressed that ending the killings required collective action, urging prayers backed with vigilance.
“As the people continue to pray… they should also watch. The people should do what we have to do and also ask the government and leaders to do what they have to do at all levels,” he said.
In his remarks, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang lamented the disunity among citizens, which he said was hindering development.
He urged Plateau residents to “drop things that divide them and focus on things that unite them,” insisting that progress could only be achieved through unity and shared purpose.

Oyo Gov Makinde Declares 2027 Presidential Ambition
Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State on Thursday officially declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election.
Makinde made the declaration during a mega rally held at Mapo Hall in Ibadan, where he also unveiled a political alliance between the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Allied Peoples Movement (APM).
The Oyo governor announced that the coalition would operate under the platform of what he described as the “Reset Nigeria Movement.”
Addressing supporters and party loyalists at the rally, Makinde said the time had come for Nigerians to collectively work towards rebuilding the country and confronting its numerous socioeconomic and political challenges.
“Therefore, today, I Oluseyi Abiodun Makinde, FNSE, announce my candidacy for the position of the President of Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the governor declared to loud cheers from supporters.
The rally attracted political stakeholders, party members and supporters from different parts of the country.
Makinde explained that the alliance between the PDP and APM was necessitated by what he described as attempts to impose a one-party system on Nigeria.
According to him, the coalition is aimed at protecting democratic values and providing Nigerians with a credible political alternative ahead of the 2027 elections.
He stressed that the movement would focus on addressing pressing national issues, including economic hardship, governance challenges and political inclusion.
The governor also urged Nigerians not to remain passive in the face of the country’s current difficulties, insisting that citizens must actively participate in nation-building.
“This is the time to confront our fears. Do not be afraid,” Makinde said.
He further called on Nigerians to engage in developmental issues as active citizens rather than mere spectators.
The declaration places Makinde among the growing list of politicians expected to jostle for the nation’s top office ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Saudi Declares Friday For Eid-el-Fitr As Moon Not Sighted
Authorities in Saudi Arabia have declared Friday, March 20, 2026, as the day for the celebration of Eid al-Fitr following the non-sighting of the crescent moon.
The announcement was made on Wednesday via the official HaraminInfo social media platforms, which provide updates on religious developments in the Kingdom.
According to the statement, efforts to sight the crescent moon across designated locations in the Kingdom were unsuccessful due to unfavourable weather conditions.
“The crescent moon has NOT been sighted in Saudi Arabia. Therefore, #EidAlFitr will be celebrated on Friday, 20th March 2026,” the statement read.
The platform also offered prayers for Muslims as the holy month of Ramadan draws to a close.
“May Allāh allow us to utilise the remaining moments of this blessed month to engage in that which pleases Him, may He accept our siyām, qiyām & a’māl and may He allow us to witness many more Ramadāns in good health. Āmīn,” it added.
Saudi authorities explained that observations were conducted across multiple locations, from Dammam—identified as the first city in the Kingdom where the crescent moon is usually sighted—to Tabuk, regarded as the last observation point.
However, persistent cloud cover and rainfall hampered visibility.
“Dammam, the first city in the Kingdom where the crescent moon of Eid al-Fitr is sighted. Tabuk – the last city in the Kingdom where the sighting ends. Until now: Cloudy conditions continue at most observation sites across the Kingdom. Rain is currently heading toward observation sites across the Kingdom,” the statement noted.
Saudi Arabia’s declaration is expected to influence several Muslim-majority countries, including Nigeria, where the official pronouncement rests with the Sultan of Sokoto.
As of the time of filing this report, Nigerians are awaiting confirmation from the Sultan regarding the sighting of the moon, which will determine the exact date for Eid-el-Fitr celebrations nationwide.
Eid-el-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month characterised by fasting, prayers, and reflection by millions of Muslims around the world.
The festival is typically observed with prayers, charity, and communal celebrations among Muslim faithful.

2027: Ex-CBN Deputy Governor Lemo Eyes Ogun Governorship Race
A former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Tunde Lemo, has declared his interest in contesting the 2027 governorship election in Ogun State.
Lemo made the disclosure while participating in the All Progressives Congress (APC) ward congress at Ward 12, Ita-Agemo, Isale-Igbein in Abeokuta.
The banker said his ambition was motivated by a desire to accelerate development at the grassroots and unlock the state’s agricultural potential.
According to him, Ogun State is richly endowed and requires purposeful leadership to harness its resources for the benefit of the people.
Lemo, who was received by enthusiastic party members, assured them of an inclusive government and unwavering loyalty to the All Progressives Congress.
He attributed the peaceful conduct of the ward congresses in the state to the policies under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Lemo said the exercise was aimed at consolidating unity and harmony within the party.
“I don’t want to canvass personal position here, but my presence here today is to underscore the fact that APC is an organic party. You can see the crowd, and we are members of one family. You have not seen anybody fighting. We are very strong and very vibrant, and people are happy because of the transformative agenda of President Bola Tinubu, but at the same time, we are building the base, because today we are having the ward congresses, and from there, of course, we move up to the National Congress. So I’m very, very excited that we have very loyal party members,” he said.
The former CBN deputy governor also lauded the developmental efforts of Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, particularly the creation of the agro-cargo airport, which has received approval to commence commercial operations.
He noted that such projects were positioning the state for economic growth and investment.
Speaking on his political aspiration, Lemo acknowledged his interest in the 2027 governorship race, while stressing that leadership is about service and improving people’s lives.
“You all know who I am, and you know what I’ve been trying to do. But by the special grace of God, it is about governance. It’s about raising the bar and ensuring the best for our people, and that’s what we’re doing, and by the special grace of God, we will get there.
“Yes, of course, I have my eyes on 2027 just like everyone else, but everything is in the hands of God,” he added.
